Twitter Explained

Twitter is an online social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read text-based posts of up to 140 characters, informally known as “tweets” to your friends, or “followers.”.

What is A Tweet?

Twitter lets you send a 140-character message, or “tweet”, where anyone can read it, though it will only be sent directly to those who have chosen to “follow” you. Tweets can be received or sent from web based browsers and mobile phones and other multimedia devices.A tweet is a text-based post of up to 140 characters. Your tweets are displayed on your profile page, on the home page of each of your followers, and in the Twitter public timeline (unless you disabled.) The short format of the tweet provides relief from email and IM fatigue.

History of Twitter

Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey and launched that July. Twitter rapidly gained worldwide popularity, with 200 million users as of 2011,generating over 200 million tweets and handling over 1.6 billion search queries per day. It is sometimes described as “the SMS of the Internet.”

Setting up a Twitter Account

You don’t have to sign up to watch the flow of information. But Twitter only becomes useful once you can dig through the piles of information flowing through in tiny bursts of information. Once you sign up you will receive a user name (ie Twitter.com/BSocialHQ) and then you can start engaging and participating in the conversation. You can receive tweets by visiting the Twitter website, IM, SMS, RSS, email or via a third-party application.
